What is the parotid?
The parotid gland is an organ that most people don’t know about. It is however, an incredibly important gland that is susceptible to many diseases.
The parotid glands are the largest of the salivary glands and produce saliva, which aids in the digestion of food. Parotid glands are located near the ear, in the upper portion of each cheek.
The parotid is at risk for tumors, both benign and cancerous. Benign tumors may affect surrounding nerves, and make surgery more difficult as they grow around the nerve. Removal of the tumor and close monitoring are necessary in order to prevent a more serious situation from occurring.
Dr. Larian can perform a biopsy to determine whether a growth is cancerous or not. In cases where surgery may be needed, Dr. Larian offers various treatments including micro-parotidectomy (the surgical procedure used to remove a parotid gland) and superficial parotidectomy.
