Minimally invasive thyroidectomy could significantly decrease thyroid cancer surgery recovery time for Argenina’s President
Los Angeles thyroid cancer specialist, Dr. Babak Larian, suggests a minimally invasive thyroidectomy would yeild a significantly shorter recovery time for President Fernandez of Argenitna.
Thyroid cancer is a very common disease, and Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the president of Argentina, has recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and will undergo surgery January 4, 2012. The president plans to take a 20-day leave of absence to recover.
However, Los Angeles ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Babak Larian, explains that her surgery could yield a significantly shorter recovery time if she opted for a minimally invasive thyroidectomy, instead of traditional surgery techniques.
According to Dr. Larian, “If President Fernandez’s surgeon performed a minimally invasive thyroidectomy to remove her thyroid cancer, it would be an outpatient surgery and only require 7 days of healing time. Additionally, she will be left with an almost invisible scar, that most people would not even see.”
Luckily, since thyroid cancer is common, most forms are easily treated, especially when detected early. Treatment usually involves removal of the thyroid, which is located in the front-lower area of the neck.
Using endoscopic surgical techniques, a minimally invasive thyroidectomy can be performed through an incision that is approximately one inch long, which when closed using a plastic surgery technique leaves an almost invisible scar. The endoscope technique not only minimizes the scar and trauma to the tissue, it also allows for a shorter hospital stay and minimal recovery time, compared to traditional thyroid surgery methods.
