The 3 Types of Thyroidectomy Surgery

A thyroidectomy, surgery to remove a portion or all of the thyroid gland, carries risk of damaging the parathyroid glands or the nerves controlling the vocal chords. This is why it is extremely important to ensure an expert surgeon, like Dr. Larian, performs your thyroid surgery.

A thyroidectomy is generally needed when a patient has thyroid cancer, thyroid nodule or other severe thyroid disorder. There are 3 different thyroidectomy procedures:

  1. Total thyroidectomy – the entire thyroid is removed
  2. Hemi-thyroidectomy – one side of the thyroid is removed
  3. Sub-total thyroidectomy – bilateral half of the thyroid is removed

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland that lies over your trachea and is just below your voice box. This delicate location requires that the thyroid is removed using advanced techniques by an experienced surgeon to improve your surgical results, while minimizing the risks.
