Snoring Solutions
Is your snoring keeping your husband or wife up at night?
Beyond being a nuisance to your bed partner, your snoring might be indicative of a serious health problem. If you are a habitual snorer, you should see an ENT doctor to determine the cause.
Snoring can be caused by sleep apnea, a disorder in which you stop breathing while you are asleep. Sleep apnea is a relatively common disorder, but if it is not monitored it can have serious effects on your health.
Even if the cause of your snoring isn’t a serious health risk, it can still put your health and comfort at risk.
Here are some easy tips to minimize your snoring:
- Change your sleep position: Sleeping on your side (instead of your back) will help prevent snoring. Elevating yourself with an extra pillow or two should also help minimize snoring.
- Lose weight: Many overweight people snore because extra fat around the neck can cause the airway to become narrower.
- Avoid alcohol before bedtime: Alcohol suppresses the activity of the airway dilator muscles, making your snoring even worse than usual.
- Seek treatment for your allergies: Chronic allergies may cause snoring by forcing you to breathe through your mouth while you sleep.
- Get a mouthpiece: A mouth piece will position the lower jaw forward, and therefore move the tongue forward with it, thus creating more room in the throat.
