How do you know if you have a thyroid disorder?
We hear about thyroid disease all the time, but few of us actually know what the thyroid does, where it is in our body, and symptoms of the disorder.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that is located in the front lower area of the neck and is responsible for releasing hormones that regulate growth, metabolism and hear rate. When your thyroid is not functioning properly it can affect several aspects of your health.
If you are suffering from hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, symptoms can include:
- Sudden and unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Shaking
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
Alternatively, if you have hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, symptoms can include:
- Unexplained weight gain
- Constipation
- Pain and stiffness in the muscles
- Increased sensitivity to cold
Keep in mind that you will not necessarily have all of these symptoms if you have a thyroid disorder. Even if you just have one of these symptoms, you should see a thyroid specialist. If a thyroid disorder goes undiagnosed, it can be detrimental to your overall health. In most cases, thyroid disorders can be treated and managed with medication that regulates the hormone production.
While Dr. Larian specializes in thyroid tumors and cancers, thyroid abnormalities are common and he wants individuals to be aware of the signs and symptoms.
